Otter: The Personal Disaster Pack

A Lifesaving Innovation by Benson Lee

‘Otter’ is a personal disaster relief backpack for both wet and dry emergencies. The pack consists of two quick-seal storages and a deployable life vest, contained within a hard protective shell. It allows people to quickly store their personal belongings as they make a run during the disaster. When deployed, it helps position the user like a backward-swimming otter, keeping the user's head out of the water at all times by supporting the back of the neck over a long period of time.

Designed by Benson Lee, Otter is a unique and innovative solution that aims to provide aid and support during times of disaster. The inspiration for this design came from the need to create a floatation device that could keep victims' heads above water, ensuring their safety and survival. By mimicking the swimming position of an otter, Otter provides a comfortable and secure way for individuals to stay afloat.

One of the standout features of Otter is its quick-sealing storages. These storages allow users to securely store their personal belongings, ensuring that they are protected during the chaos of a disaster. The hard protective shell adds an extra layer of security, safeguarding the contents from sharp debris and other potential hazards.

Another key component of Otter is the deployable life vest. By squeezing the life vest after placing it around the neck, a chemical reaction quickly inflates the vest, providing buoyancy and keeping the user afloat. This innovative mechanism ensures that the life vest can be easily activated in times of need, providing immediate assistance to the wearer.

The production of Otter involves the use of various materials and technologies. The polycarbonate shell is manufactured using vacuum form methods, resulting in a single-piece design that reduces manufacturing costs. The quick-seal dry bags are made of Polyvinyl chloride tarpaulin and feature magnetic strips for a secure seal. The frame of the backpack is made of Ethylene-vinyl acetate foam, upholstered in nylon fabric, while the straps are made of durable nylon with quick-release buckles.

Although the design of Otter is still at a conceptual stage, initial tests have shown promising results. However, further professional tests with working prototypes are needed to ensure its effectiveness and reliability in real-life disaster situations.

With its unique features and innovative design, Otter has the potential to make a significant impact in disaster relief efforts. By providing a practical and efficient solution for individuals to store their personal belongings and stay afloat during emergencies, Otter aims to ease the recovery phase for victims and give them a chance to start anew. This design has been recognized and awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment category in 2018, further validating its excellence and contribution to a better world.
